What we collect
We collect your email address for sign-in, the PDF files you upload, and your highlights, notes, saved words and reading progress. We also save your shelves, settings, summaries and book conversations so you can return to them. We keep usage counts and AI request records, including model and token counts, to manage limits and costs. If you join the Premium waitlist, we save your email address.
Where your data is stored
Your data is stored with our cloud hosting provider, encrypted in transit and at rest. Your library is private: other readers cannot access it. This is not end-to-end encryption; our hosting and AI providers process data where needed to run the service. If you add your own OpenAI API key, we store it separately encrypted and do not send it back to your browser.
How AI uses your text
Selected text, surrounding passages and your questions are sent to an AI provider to generate explanations, translations, summaries and answers. To make book chat and connections work, we also process book passages and highlights into searchable representations. We save AI results so repeated requests can use a saved answer. We do not use your books or requests to train AI models. Provider processing and retention are governed by their API terms; if you use your own OpenAI key, your provider account settings also apply.
What we never do
We never sell your data or share it with advertisers. We do not read your books for our own purposes. Automated processing happens only to provide the reading and AI features you use.
Your choices and rights
You can export your highlights and notes from the Highlights page at any time. You can permanently delete your account in Settings, including uploaded books, highlights, notes, saved words and other account data. You may also contact us to ask about, correct or request a copy of your personal data. Deletion removes active account data; temporary provider backups and any records required by law may remain under the providers’ retention rules.
Cookies and sign-in storage
We use only the cookies and browser storage needed to keep you signed in and remember essential preferences. We do not use advertising cookies.
